Radikon Ribolla Gialla 2020 (1L)

$9999

The wine that taught the world how to love orange wine, in its traditional one-liter format. Ribolla Gialla is Radikon's most iconic bottling — the indigenous Friulian grape that Stanko Radikon used to pioneer his radical reinvention of skin-contact white wine, and the cuvée that put Oslavia on the global map. The vines, originally planted by Stanko's grandfather, sit dauntingly close together on steep slopes of clay, marl, and limestone right up against the Slovenian border, farmed without synthetics since 1995. Stanko, who passed in 2016, used to shrug and say he made wine the way his grandfather did; his son Saša and the family continue exactly that way. Months of skin contact, long aging in large neutral botti, no compromises. The liter is the format Stanko insisted on — too much for one, just right for two.

"Dried apricots mix with nuances of mint and autumnal spice as the 2020 Ribolla evolves in the glass. It splashes across the palate with ease as notes of sun tea and white peach meld over a tactile core of salty minerals. The Ribolla leaves a saturation of sour citrus that puckers the cheeks. Hints of sour melon add further tension through the long, gently tannic finish. The balance here is fabulous, but do give the 2020 some more time to mellow." —Eric Guido

"Ribolla sits at the heart of the modern macerated wine movement, and the Radikon 2020 Ribolla is a clear expression of that philosophy. Made from fully destemmed fruit, the wine undergoes around three months of skin maceration before aging in oak, resulting in a vivid orange color with deep pumpkin hues. Ribolla’s naturally thick skins give the wine notable volume and texture. Botrytis can sometimes occur. On the Ponca soils of Oslavia, where long macerations are balanced by freshness, the wine shows structural depth with a beautifully layered, textural finish." —Monica Larner

More about Radikon

Stanko Radikon was a true icon of both the traditional wines and grapes of Friuli and of uncompromising, natural winemaking. The type of winemaking that Stanko begin implementing in 1995 wasn't new, it was actually a return to how his grandfather made wine.

Using extended macerations, or skin contact, with white grapes is now a global trend known to many as "orange wine", but this is indeed the tradition in certain regions including the Italian-Slovenian borderlands of Friuli. It was only in the second half of the 20th century that the region focused on more "international" styled wines, without skin contact and with fining and filtration.

After working alongside his father for a few years, Stanko abandoned this style, realizing that the local grapes benefited greatly from the traditional methods of his region. He also began bottling everything in specially designed 500ml and 1 liter bottles, as he preferred these for both serving and aging. This uncompromising approach was a tough sell as far as marketing is concerned, but Stanko didn't care.

His stubborn insistence on tradition and quality eventually paid off, and his wines and his estate are now revered around the world. Sadly Stanko succumbed to cancer in 2016 at the age of 62. His children, led by his son Saša, have taken the reigns and are continuing his legacy.

Saša has been deeply involved in the farming and winemaking for over a decade, and he is devoted to his father's philosophy. That said he is his own person, thoughtful and serious minded but also practical and, in the right mood quite funny.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with herbs, prosciutto and aged cheeses, mushroom risotto, miso-glazed eggplant, slow-cooked pork shoulder, anything with umami depth.

Tasting Profile

Powerful and jaw-droppingly intense. Dried apricot, orange peel, walnut, beeswax, and tea, all wrapped around a backbone of racy acidity and a fleshy, almost tannic grip. Sensual, savory, and utterly singular.
