Remi Leroy Champagne Extra Brut NV ['22 Base]

$6499

Rémi Leroy farms a small estate in the Côte des Bar, the southern outpost of Champagne that sits closer to Chablis than to Reims — and increasingly draws the attention of drinkers chasing grower-Champagne with a sense of place. Trained as both an oenologist and an agricultural engineer, Rémi farms his roughly nine hectares organically, with a focus on biodiversity and minimal intervention in the cellar. (And no — no relation to the Domaine Leroy in Burgundy.) The Extra Brut is roughly 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, a mirror of his vineyard holdings, with the 2022 vintage as the base. Aged 18 to 20 months on the lees in a mix of stainless steel and used Burgundian barrels, with just 3 grams of dosage, it's a serious, low-intervention Champagne at a price that still feels possible.

More about

Remi Leroy is a new name on the scene, but the wines are super impressive. They transmit the unique mineral signature of Kimmeridigian and Portlandian limestone directly into the glass. There is a sun-kissed, mouth-filling density of fruit that is easy to love balanced by crunchy acidity and cooling, mineral-cut that makes everything feel lifted, energetic and weightless. It is an industry secret that many of the top houses of Champagne love to buy Pinot Noir from the Aube for exactly this reason: ripe healthy fruit with such freshness is not so easy to come by.

The wines are vinified in a combination of stainless steel and used oak barrels that he sources from none other than Thomas Pico in Chablis and Hubert Lamy in Saint-Aubin. Everything ages on the full lees and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Reserve wines are from a solera started back in 2009 kept in 80% stainless steel and 20% older oak barrels. If dosage is employed it is kept to a bare minimum. The style of the wines are vinous and powerful with elegant, almost burgundian reduction. As Remi explains: “more than Champagne, Champagne wine.”

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters, gougères, roast chicken, salty snacks, sushi, charcuterie, fried fish, brunch eggs.

Tasting Profile

Crisp and energetic, with green apple, lemon, brioche, and a chalky, almost saline finish. Pinot Noir gives it weight; the low dosage keeps it taut.
