Roagna Langhe Rosso 2020

$5999

Roagna is, of course, in the panoply of great Piedmontese producers. Their top Barolos and Barbarescos are like catnip to top collectors. But unlike, say, Roberto Conterno, Luca Roagna still makes a few wines that are affordable and — for the moment, at least — available in large enough quantities that we can offer them here. The Langhe Rosso is exactly that wine: 100% Nebbiolo drawn from declassified Barbaresco and Barolo parcels and made in precisely the same traditional spirit as the cru bottlings — long maceration, large neutral botti, patience. It's the most accessible entry into the Roagna style, and from 2020 — a classic Piedmont vintage — it's a happy way to drink seriously without breaking the bank.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2020 Langhe Rosso is mostly from young vines in Pira, which in this case means vines under 30 years of age. Sweet floral overtones meld into a core of dried red cherry fruit, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint and crushed flowers. Deceptively light in body, the Langhe Rosso offers lovely tension and energy. This is a relatively open-knit style for Roagna and a fabulous introduction to the house style." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

91 points

"This red exudes cherry, rose hip and mineral flavors, with vibrant acidity and pliable tannins. Balanced overall, with stay- ing power on the finish."

Kerin O'Keefe

93 points

"Fragrant and loaded with class, the Roagna 2020 Langhe Rosso has beguiling aromas of rose petal, new leather, dark spice and wild herb. On the linear, savory palate, bright acidity lifts juicy Morello cherry, baking spice, star anise and blood orange. Made with Nebbiolo vines 25-30-years-old, it has lithe, refined tannins. Drink through 2032." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Roagna

Luca Roagna and his family have been making some of the greatest wines in Piemonte for generations, and the quality just keeps rising. Anyone will be able to respect and admire the work of Luca Roagna: no step taken in the vineyard or the winery is without complete follow-through of thought.

Standing in the middle of one of their vineyards, you almost forget it's a place to grow grapes. Grass, insects and wildlife flourish throughout the vines, which are never subjected to chemical sprays, mowing or tilling. The biosphere is diverse and vigorous, the soils healthy: the result is impeccably grown grapes ready to become impeccably made wine.
