The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux was one of those years that needed no excuses -- warm, ripe, generous -- and this is the second wine of Gruaud Larose, a classed-growth estate in Saint-Julien, from exactly that vintage. Nearly two decades on, it is doing the thing that makes aged Bordeaux worth the wait: the fruit has folded into tobacco, cocoa and savory depth, and the tannins have gone soft and easy. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a slug of Petit Verdot, off the estate's classed-growth Saint-Julien vineyards (Gruaud Larose only began converting to organic farming in 2019). Second wines from good estates in great vintages remain one of the few honest ways to drink mature Bordeaux without a fight. It is ready right now -- give it an hour open and go.

Robert Parker

"A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. This is just a little lean on the nose considering the vintage. Touches of iodine and black olive tapenade inflecting the black fruits with a hint of boysenberry developing with time in the glass. Gaining some weight and intensity with each swirl. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced with firm, ripe tannins, good weight towards the Cabernet dominated finish that has an insistent grip, touches of spice towards the finish. This is a very promising Sarget." —Neal Martin

"The second wine of Gruaud-Larose, farmed organically. Not overblown. Well mannered with an undertow of the drama of the vintage. Throbs a bit on the palate."

Decanter

90 points

"A spicy and fat, rich wine, atypical of Bordeaux. There is grip and depth of flavour here, with blackcurrant coulis character and some lovely menthol edging. A balanced wine."
