Scarlet Orange Amaro (700ml)

A blood orange amaro made with real blood orange juice as well as the peel. It comes from Iseya Distillery in Sagamihara, Japan, founded by Tatsuya Motonaga. The blood oranges come from a friend's farm in Ehime Prefecture. The peels macerate in a neutral sugarcane spirit with other botanicals, more than 25 in all, among them lemon balm, bramble leaves, ginger and camellia flowers. The two halves are then blended and bottled, sweetened with Japanese beet sugar and coloured naturally with cochineal. Motonaga tended bar at Tokyo's Bar Caol Ila and Bar Benfiddich before building his distillery in a 100-year-old house he renovated in Kanagawa Prefecture, and this bottle reads like a bartender's idea of what an orange aperitivo can be. At 20% ABV it's an easy one to reach for before dinner, topped up with soda or simply poured over ice.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Aperitivo snacks like salted Marcona almonds, green olives and potato chips; an olive oil or almond cake; dark chocolate with orange peel; yuzu or citrus sorbet.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bright, juicy blood orange aperitivo: fresh citrus juice and zesty peel up front, with herbal lift from lemon balm, a little ginger warmth and a floral note. Typically sweet and fairly light-bodied at this low strength, with a gentle bitterness on the finish. Think a softer, fruitier Aperol, made for soda or ice.
