Selbach-Oster Mosel Riesling Zeltinger Alte Reben Trocken 2023

$3599

The Selbachs have been growing Riesling in Zeltingen for roughly four centuries, which means Johannes Selbach and his son Sebastian know exactly which rows are worth keeping. This dry bottling draws on vines averaging around sixty years old across the village's best slate slopes — Schlossberg, Himmelreich and the Sonnenuhr — and ages in big old Mosel casks rather than steel. Old vines make less fruit and more concentration; old wood lets the wine breathe without adding any flavor of its own. What you get is a dry Riesling with the depth of a great site and none of the fuss. This is the bottle to hand anyone who says they don't like German wine.

"The 2023 Riesling Zeltinger Alte Reben trocken comes from the Schlossberg, Himmelreich and Sonnenuhr sites in Zeltingen, with vines averaging 60 years old. Subtle herbal savor offers yarrow and a touch of tansy. The palate is serene, concentrated and beautifully tangy, with citric brightness. This very restrained wine is full of direction, offering depth rather than strength and a long echo." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"From the Himmelreich and Sonnenuhr, the 2023 Zeltinger Riesling trocken "Alte Reben" is quite intense and concentrated on the pure and flinty nose, yet it is a bit muted in terms of expression. Medium-bodied, savory and grippy on the palate, this is a quite intense yet slightly rustic Riesling. It was vinified in fuders and bottled in August 2024 along with the grand crus (GG). The finish is quite astringent and not very charming or stimulating. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Potent and savory, this wine leads with petrol, green apple skin and tinned peach notes backed by acacia funk and macadamia, plus wisps of cardamom and star anise. Though dry, there™s a certain decadence to this white™s generous body, which is expertly balanced by a tug of fruit skin bitterness through the long, radiating finish."

More about Selbach-Oster

Johannes Selbach is beyond a doubt one of the great producers in the wine world. But, being based in Germany, their wines are available at totally reasonable prices. Usually we can stock many of them year-round.

Selbach is renowned for his ability to take a snapshot of a vineyard at one place in time with every bottling he makes. His favorite sites are picked all at once, with grapes at every level of ripeness, fermented together and labelled with a site name like Rotlay or Antrecht, rather than a Prädikat level.

The Selbach family has been making wine in the Mosel for 400 hundred years, making them one of the oldest wine making houses in the region. But the wines are not old-fashioned; in fact, they exemplify everything we love about modern day Mosel wines: racy minerality, finesse and beautifully balanced acidity.
