Selbach-Oster Mosel Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Trocken Grosses Gewachs 2023

$5499

The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr — the sundial vineyard — is one of the Mosel's monuments: a wall of blue slate so steep that picking it is closer to rock climbing than farming. This is Selbach-Oster's Grosses Gewächs, the dry wine from their best mid-slope parcels, including vines still growing on their original ungrafted roots. It rests on its lees for the better part of a year, which gives it a breadth and texture you don't expect from a grape this high-strung. Dry Mosel Riesling at this level is a serious wine, closer in ambition to grand cru white Burgundy than to anything sweet. Give it air now, or give it five years and be rewarded.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr GG comes from elevated parcels that completely avoid botrytis. Ripe lemon, earth and crushed chervil create a gentle nose. The palate is smooth and almost soothing with lemony yeast, brightness and a luminous gentleness. A distant but aromatic aspect of green orange peel highlights the long finish." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"From the mid-slope and partly ungrafted vines, the 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling GG is pure but intense on the rich and generous nose that displays concentrated and dried white fruit aromas. Full-bodied, round and textured on the palate, this is a powerful and quite yeasty ZSU that was aged sur lie for about 10 months. The wine is saline, crystalline and grippy yet still a bit muted. It is dense and powerful yet still not shining. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026."

More about Selbach-Oster

Johannes Selbach is beyond a doubt one of the great producers in the wine world. But, being based in Germany, their wines are available at totally reasonable prices. Usually we can stock many of them year-round.

Selbach is renowned for his ability to take a snapshot of a vineyard at one place in time with every bottling he makes. His favorite sites are picked all at once, with grapes at every level of ripeness, fermented together and labelled with a site name like Rotlay or Antrecht, rather than a Prädikat level.

The Selbach family has been making wine in the Mosel for 400 hundred years, making them one of the oldest wine making houses in the region. But the wines are not old-fashioned; in fact, they exemplify everything we love about modern day Mosel wines: racy minerality, finesse and beautifully balanced acidity.

Tasting Profile

Dry and full-bodied by Mosel standards — textured and rounded from lees aging, with citrus, stone fruit and a firm mineral spine. Powerful but tense.
