Selbach-Oster Mosel Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett 2023

$2999

Kabinett is the Mosel's greatest trick: a wine under 10% alcohol that tastes gently sweet and yet finishes utterly refreshing. Selbach-Oster draws this one mostly from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, the steep blue-slate sundial slope that is about as good as Mosel real estate gets, and ferments it naturally in old Fuder, the big neutral casks the region has leaned on for generations. The Selbachs have been doing this in Zeltingen for something like 400 years; they are not experimenting. The result is a wine you can open on a Tuesday night without a second thought, or forget in the back of a cellar for fifteen years. Chill it hard and pour.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett, from elevated parcels in this site, spells stone and naked slate, opening into aromatic citrus with hints of green Seville orange peel and a breezy freshness. It has wonderful fill, vibrancy and beautiful structure. Untold riches lie at the core. Exquisite." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is clear and refined on the elegant nose with notes reminiscent of white stone fruit intertwined with finely weathered slate aromas. Medium-bodied, crystalline and precise on the palate, this is a round, charming, medium-sweet ZSU with a fine and stimulating grip and good tension. 9% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Selbach-Oster

Johannes Selbach is beyond a doubt one of the great producers in the wine world. But, being based in Germany, their wines are available at totally reasonable prices. Usually we can stock many of them year-round.

Selbach is renowned for his ability to take a snapshot of a vineyard at one place in time with every bottling he makes. His favorite sites are picked all at once, with grapes at every level of ripeness, fermented together and labelled with a site name like Rotlay or Antrecht, rather than a Prädikat level.

The Selbach family has been making wine in the Mosel for 400 hundred years, making them one of the oldest wine making houses in the region. But the wines are not old-fashioned; in fact, they exemplify everything we love about modern day Mosel wines: racy minerality, finesse and beautifully balanced acidity.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Spicy takeout, pork belly buns, curries, or a good ham-and-cheese sandwich.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and lightly sweet, with green apple, citrus and wet slate. Racy acidity makes it read as refreshing rather than sweet.
