Serafino Rivella Langhe Nebbiolo 2023

$6299

Barbaresco country, scaled down to its purest expression. Serafino Rivella works a tiny plot in the Montestefano cru of Barbaresco, a Flatiron favorite for traditional, slow-evolving Nebbiolo that rewards patience. This Langhe Nebbiolo is the entry to his cellar, made from young vines and declassified fruit, vinified in the same old-school, hands-off manner as his Barbaresco. It offers a real taste of that pedigree at a far gentler price, with the perfume and grip that mark the house style.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from young vines in Montestefano. Pliant and beautifully layered, the 2023 is the first vintage that starts to show real textural depth following replanting in 2017. Macerated red cherry, rose petal, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are some of the notes that gradually open in the glass. For now, this parcel—previously planted to Dolcetto—can only produce Langhe Nebbiolo because of regulatory limits on the production of Barbaresco. The 2023 spent 15 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation, then 7-8 months in cask. Readers in search of a wine that overdelivers on all fronts will find that here. I would be delighted to own it." —Antonio Galloni

More about Serafino Rivella

Cantina Serafino Rivella consists of a husband and wife, Teobaldo and Maria Rivella, and that’s it. When they step into the garden behind their house they find themselves in one of the greatest places on earth for the Nebbiolo grape: Montestefano, in Barbaresco.

Teobaldo’s father planted this vineyard in this cru in 1963, and they have been making Barbaresco from it ever since. Aside from a little Dolcetto, it’s all they've ever made.

The winemaking is so unchanged that Galloni offers them as a link to Piedmont’s history. Others have described Rivella as the Bartolo Mascarello of Barbaresco. But with hardly any wine to offer, they’ve stayed under the radar.

Montestefano is known for its dark and brooding wines. It faces south and has more calcium in its soils than any other Barbaresco cru. It is the cru that can most easily be mistaken for Barolo.
