Stephane Ogier Cote Rotie Mes Grands Lieux 2016

$11499

Stéphane Ogier is one of the names that changed how people think about the Northern Rhône. He grew up in Ampuis and brought a Burgundian mindset to Côte-Rôtie: carve the hill into micro-parcels, farm each obsessively, vinify separately, and let gentle élevage refine the wines. If one word describes the Ogier approach, it's precision, in the vineyard and the cellar. 'Mes Grands Lieux' gathers fruit from across his Côte-Rôtie holdings, and at this point it's a wonderfully mature bottle, the Syrah's structure softening into something complex and savory. A name more familiar from auction catalogs than store shelves.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Côte-Rôtie Mes Grands Lieux is a little reductive at first. A short rest in the glass gradually brings out black fruits, leafy tones and dried violets. Citric tones add more layers. Medium-bodied and utterly lifted, the 2016 strikes superb overall harmony, leading into the close with magnificent balance on the refined finish. 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier were co-fermented." —Nicolas Greinacher

"Still reductive at this stage, the 2016 Mes Grands Lieux stands out as one of the most inherently complex, delicate and perfumed wines of the vertical tasting. It unwinds slowly in the glass, revealing aromas of dark berries, rose, timut pepper, mocha, tapenade and mulberries. Full-bodied yet remarkably poised, it is dense and deep, built around a multidimensional core of fruit framed by filigreed tannins and energized by incisive acidity, extending into a long, ethereal and seemingly endless finish. Here, acidity plays a defining role, conferring both lift and finesse while ensuring the wine’s capacity to age gracefully for two decades or more." —Yohan Castaing
