Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2018 [NET]

$79999

2018 is the modern Burgundy vintage in its most generous mode — a warm, ripe, abundant year that produced wines of immediate appeal, fuller bodied than the classical cool-vintage profile but still capable of transparency in the right hands. Cathiard's Malconsorts in 2018 puts on the muscle without losing the address: the deep red clay of this climat, sitting flush against La Tâche, channels the vintage's warmth into something fleshier and darker-fruited than usual, while Sébastien's strict farming and gentle extraction keep it focused. A 2018 to drink while you wait for the cooler vintages.

"A cool, pure, airy and restrained nose combines a really lovely spiciness with overtly floral notes on the aromas of black raspberry, wild strawberry and exotic Asian tea. The super-sleek and utterly delicious middle weight flavors offer excellent power and drive while displaying outstanding length on the intensely saline-inflected and youthfully austere and exceptionally firm finish. This robust effort is not a monster of concentration, but I really like the balance." —Allen Meadows

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has the most cerebral nose of any Cathiard Premier Cru, scents of black fruit intermingling with ash, sous-bois and light iodine scents. It also seems the most mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, unerring symmetry and a killer sense of symmetry that is utterly beguiling. It is endowed with the backbone one expects from a Malconsorts and a persistence all of its own. Heavenly." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The most reserved premier cru in the cellar is, as usual, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts. Opening in the glass with scents of dark berry fruit, plums, exotic spices, dark chocolate, smoked meats and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, displaying exquisite structural refinement and superb concentration, concluding with a long, fragrant finish. There are 16 barrels this year." —William Kelley

"Sébastien Cathiard's vines are in the upper part of the Premier Cru next to Domaines de Montille and Hudelot-Noëllat. The freshness of the higher altitude seems to suit the increasingly refined style here, which has moved away from assertive oak. This saw 60% new wood and is a sappy, textured, layered Pinot Noir with racy acidity."

More about Sylvain Cathiard

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.

Tasting Profile

Riper and fleshier with black cherry, blackberry, plum, sweet baking spice, and dark earth. Fuller-bodied for a Cathiard, plush tannin, lower acidity than a cool vintage. Generous and immediately approachable.
