Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2021 [NET]

$99999

After a streak of warm vintages, 2021 brought Burgundy back to its classical roots — cooler, lower in alcohol, with the perfumed lift and acid drive that older Burgundy drinkers grew up loving. Cathiard's Malconsorts in this style is a quiet revelation: lifted red fruit instead of dark, perfume instead of weight, the deep clay of this La Tâche-adjacent climat translating cool-vintage detail into something both refined and serious. Yields were brutally small after the April frost, so what's here is precious — and unmistakably a return to form.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru takes time to really cohere on the nose, more backward than recent vintages, sultry even. This seems to lean more towards black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins. There's backbone here, assertiveness, yet without the density or opulence that has come to define Cathiard's style, so very different. This will require some time in bottle but will have much to offer." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"There are only five barrels of the 2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, representing around one-third of a normal crop for Cathiard. Offering up aromas of cherries, orange zest, raspberries, sweet spices and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and structured, with powdery tannins and a serious, reserved profile. This is generally one of the slowest evolving wines in the cellar, and that's the case this year." —William Kelley

More about Sylvain Cathiard

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.
