Sylvain Cathiard Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2020 [NET]

$84999

2020 is the balancing act — a warm vintage, no question, but one where the better addresses pulled off ripeness without flab, density without heat. Cathiard's Malconsorts in 2020 lands on that knife edge: the deep red clay of this climat (the upper-middle slice, directly adjacent to La Tâche) gives ripeness real lift, and Sébastien's restrained hand keeps everything in line. The result is plush, pure, and lifted — modern Burgundy at its most coherent. Drinks beautifully early, will reward patience.

"A markedly more restrained nose only reluctantly displays its array of much more floral scented red currant, cherry and anise whiffs. Somewhat surprisingly, the larger-scaled flavors are not quite as dense but even so they are more powerful, muscular and minerality while the overtly firm supporting structure really becomes apparent on the dusty, youthfully austere and explosively long finish. As is usually the case at this stage, the Cathiard Malconsorts is largely a block of potential so plenty of patience will be required but it should ultimately be brilliant." —Allen Meadows

"The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a very intense and opulent bouquet that is currently less expressive than the Les Suchots, but I find more breeding and delineation here, more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, wonderful structure, certainly the spiciest as if there is some whole bunch in here (there is none)." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Offering up a youthfully primary bouquet of cherries, wild berries, plums, sweet soil tones and spices, the 2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts is full-bodied, rich and muscular, with an ample, multidimensional mid-palate framed by fine but firm tannins. As ever, it's one of the least-evolved wines in the cellar." —William Kelley

More about Sylvain Cathiard

Cathiard is a tiny domain - there never is very much wine. You enter a spick and span white stucco suburban home in the center of the small village of Vosne Romanee. There is a walled vineyard outside the front door. Go down the staircase and you are in a minuscule cuverie and barrel room. Not a lot of barrels here either. No wonder the wine is sold in 6 bottle cases.

Sebastien Cathiard has been slowly assuming control of this top estate in Vosne-Romanée from his father Sylvain. He is now fully in charge, but the wines have been so good for so long that he wisely has changed very little. They continue to farm meticulously, de-stem and rigorously sort all the fruit prior to fermentation. The only thing he has changed is the gradual reduction of new oak, seeking a bit more purity of terroir expression.
