Tarlant Champagne Brut Nature Zero NV ['17 Base] (375ml)

$4699

Tarlant is the Vallée de la Marne family long synonymous with zero-dosage Champagne, so when they call a wine 'Zero' they mean it. This Brut Nature gets no added sugar at all, which leaves nothing to hide behind: just pure terroir, racy acidity and the character of the fruit. Built on the 2017 base, it's a crisp, mineral, food-loving grower Champagne with real elegance and class. This Zero is a hero. Comes in a handy 375ml half-bottle.

"Tarlant's NV Brut Nature Zero (2012 base) packs a serous punch. Rich, vinous and expansive on the palate, the Brut Nature is a fabulous introduction to this range. Lemon oil, chamomile, dried flowers and apricot all open over time, gaining freshness and aromatic lift. Time in the glass brings up tons of red-fruited intensity from the Pinots. This is such a gorgeous NV Champagne." —Antonio Galloni

"Based on the 2017 vintage and supplemented by 40% reserve wine, Tarlant's NV Brut Nature Zero was disgorged in October 2023 after five and a half years aging sur lattes. Sourced from riverine hillsides and reflecting the mosaic of four villages where the estate owns vines, it is a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with the addition of approximately 4% heirloom varieties. Vinified in wood, it bursts from the glass with notes of pear and fresh bread crust mingling with grapefruit and green apple. Medium- to full-bodied, vinous yet incisive, it is giving and precise, with tangy acids and chalky back-end grip. With some 100,000 bottles produced annually, this is the cornerstone cuvée of the estate." —Kristaps Karklins

"Vivid acidity is a live wire driving this salty Champagne, layered with flavors of poached apricotand cherry fruit, pastry dough, blanched almond andlemon pith. Taut and lip-smacking through the minerally finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Petit Meslier, Arbanne and Pinot Blanc."

More about Tarlant

In Champagne’s Vallée de la Marne, Benoît and Mélanie Tarlant manage their vines and their cellar the way a mad scientist runs his laboratory. A pinch of that, a dash of this; everything is done painstakingly by hand and with keen attention to every detail.

These 12th generation vignerons buck the trends of the Marne, where Pinot Meunier dominates. Instead, the Tarlants have planted half of their 13 hectares to Pinot Noir, and just under a third to Chardonnay.

Tarlant père, Jean-Mary, made waves in Champagne in the ‘70s by producing some of the region’s first Brut Nature wines, with no added dosage; the aim here is to allow the purity of the fruit to beam through the glass, without any manipulations.

With all of the extraordinary terroir, meticulous farming and winemaking techniques practices in use at Tarlant, you'd think the wines would sell for a ton of money—but no, somehow, over 12 generations, the Tarlant name has remained under the radar.
