This is volcanic Tenerife white, and it's the easiest way into the world of one of the Canary Islands' most uncompromising little operations. Tierra Fundida means "Molten Earth". Loreto Pancorbo and Gabriel Morales started it in 2017 after years in more conventional wineries, and they now live and make wine in a combined house and winery deep in the Tenerife countryside. There's no machinery, wine is racked by gravity, and the whole estate makes only about 10,000 bottles. The Wanderer White is 100% organically farmed Listán Blanco from the Los Topes and Los Realejos vineyards. The couple's Los Topes site sits at 620 metres in the Orotava Valley, where it usually stays cooler while the grapes ripen. The wine was fermented in concrete and then spent eight months in used French oak, which gives it texture rather than an oaky taste. The Wanderer line takes its name from Cat Power's album: Loreto heard the song "Wanderer" first thing one morning during harvest, and it stuck.

More about Tierra Fundida

Tierra Fundida is a brand-new import — it landed in New York just last year. They work just 3.5 hectares, in the Valle de la Orotava, in the north of Tenerife, growing native grapes like Listán Blanco, Albillo Criollo, Negramoll and Verdello. Everything is done by hand and by gravity; they use an old vertical press, concrete and clay for fermentation, and clay and barrels for aging. There are free range farm animals roaming everywhere, and the winemakers live on site. These are pure, elegant expressions of Tenerife’s wild terroir.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic volcanic Tenerife white: lemon, green apple and a hint of white flowers over a salty, smoky, flinty streak. Fermentation in concrete and time in used French oak typically add a rounded texture rather than oaky flavour, and the cooler Orotava Valley sites keep the acidity fresh. Think a saltier, smokier take on Chablis, finishing dry and saline.
