Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella 2021

Amarone starts with patience: after harvest the grapes are laid out in the fruttaio, the estate's drying loft, and left there for about three months through the cold, shriveling by roughly a third of their weight until everything in them is concentrated. The Tommasi family have been doing this in Valpolicella since 1902, when Giacomo Tommasi bought his first vineyard, and they released their first Amarone in 1959. The 2021 blends Corvina with Corvinone, Rondinella and a little Oseleta, then spends three years in 35- and 65-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and a further year in bottle before release. It was a calm growing season — cold dry winter, balanced spring, mild summer — which brought the fruit in evenly ripe and healthy in early autumn, and the wine shows it: deep and full-bodied but, to the family's credit, never a bruiser. Pour it late, with something rich.

"A harmonious red, quite elegant for an Amarone, with a refreshing plum skin tang that buoys flavors of plumped black cherry, dried fig, spiced orange peel, sweet tobacco and fresh earth. Fine, chalky tannins show on the finish. Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone and Oseleta. Drink now through 2036."

More about Tommasi

Tommasi is a family-run estate founded in 1902 by Giacomo Tommasi in the village of Pedemonte, which lies in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico. Strict in his philosophy to respect the integrity of the terroir and the traditional ways of winemaking in Valpolicella, winemaker Giancarlo dries all grapes for his Amarone in the traditional fruttaio room for at least three months, and prefers to age his wines in large oak casks over small barriques. Tommasi is known for this classic approach that favors elegance and balance, with deep fruit complimented by spicy, earthy flavors.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised short ribs, osso buco, mushroom-heavy risotto, or aged Monte Veronese and Parmigiano. It is also the traditional partner for a wedge of hard cheese and nothing else.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and dry, with dried cherry, fig and plum, savory earth, thyme and a coffee note from the long cask aging. Warming and deep, with smooth ripe tannins and enough acidity to keep it from feeling heavy.
