Trail Marker Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2023

$2999

Trail Marker is the project of Drew Huffine and Emily Virgil — a husband-and-wife team making old-world-leaning Chardonnay and Pinot from California's cool, fog-licked corners. Drew cut his teeth at Copain, DuMol, and Kosta Browne, but the wines here go the other way: low alcohol, high acid, hands-off in the cellar, place-driven. This Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay draws from family-farmed sites high in the redwoods, where coastal fog keeps the fruit lean and bright. The wines are made in small batches and tend to disappear quickly.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains) is fabulous. What a wine. In 2023, Trail Marker decided not to bottle vineyard designates, so all the fruit went into this bottling. The result is a pedigreed, complex Chardonnay endowed with tons of nuance to play off its vertical structure. Sage, mint, dried citrus peel and chamomile all build in the glass. This is shaping up to be one of the hidden gems of the year. It is everything a Chardonnay made in a low-alcohol style should be—bright and vibrant but not at all austere." —Antonio Galloni

More about Trail Marker

Trail Marker is another one of our fabulous new California discoveries. A tiny production, craft winery that sources fruit from small, responsibly farmed and passionately cared for vineyards from Mendocino to Santa Ynez. Run by husband and wife duo Drew and Emily, their winemaking style allows them to make wines that are juicy, high acid, low alcohol — well balanced expressions of these excellent vineyards. From native Austrian varietals such as Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt to Chardonnay and Pinot, all of their wines are delicious and expressive!
