Valravn Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

$1999

Valravn takes its name from Danish folklore — the supernatural raven said to drink the blood of fallen warriors on the battlefield, a fittingly dark image for a Sonoma County Cabernet. The 2023 sources fruit from across the county, giving it the breadth and richness of a true Sonoma blend: ripe black fruit, supple tannins, and the rounder, more generous personality that distinguishes Sonoma Cab from its more austere Napa neighbors. A confident everyday Cabernet at a price that lets you actually drink it on a Tuesday.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is a seriously delicious, overachieving wine that delivers the goods. Strong savory, earthy and mineral inflections give the 2023 tons of Sonoma character. Inky dark fruit, lavender, cloves, menthol and licorice fill out the layers. Juicy and effusive, with tons of character, the 2023 is compelling." —Antonio Galloni

More about Valravn

There is just starting to emerge a new class of wine in California that may be the most exciting of recent trends. New wineries with true artisanal spirits are making everyday, affordable wines. One of the best we’ve come across is Valravn.

Why aren’t there more Valravns out there? Probably, it’s because producing wine this good for such a low price is really hard. It takes a force of nature. Someone like proprietor Baron Ziegler, the kind of guy who bought Bordeaux futures when he was 15 and then flipped them for enough profit to make his first real estate purchase. Baron already had several wine projects behind him (he started Banshee for example) before he founded Valravn.
