Vietti Barolo Monvigliero 2021

$25999

Verduno sits at the northern edge of Barolo, well away from the fame of La Morra and Serralunga, and for decades that kept it a specialist's secret. Monvigliero is the reason that changed. The hill runs due south on a steep, pale, calcareous slope, and it makes Barolo built on perfume and lift rather than brawn - rose and red fruit over a frame that feels almost weightless right up until the tannins arrive. Vietti is one of the houses that made cru Barolo something people argue about in the first place, going back to their single-vineyard bottlings in the 1960s. 2021 was a classically proportioned Piedmont vintage: ripe without heaviness, acidity fully intact. This wants years in a cellar, or a long decant and a dinner worth the trouble.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is another step forward for Vietti. Aromatic and lifted, the 2021 is all class. The stems (60%) are evident but not as strong of a marker as they were in the first years. Stylistically, the Monvigliero is closest to the Ravera, with which it shares a taut, mineral-driven personality." —Antonio Galloni

"This is the baby in the bunch, representing one of the newest additions to the Vietti portfolio, with the first vintage produced in 2018. The learning curve in Monvigliero is always steep, or so most winemakers tell me, because very few can go to 100% whole-cluster fermentation. Indeed, the 2021 Barolo Monvigliero sees 60% whole clusters. The Vietti team is experienced, and this wine is pristine. This vintage was harvested on September 30th, and maceration was a bit shorter, at 20 days. The wine shows a delicate film of pink salt with garden herbs, lemon leaves and spring flowers. It is a wine of extreme elegance, but I find that this vintage is especially Mediterranean in character. Production is 8,663 bottles." —Monica Larner

"This red is aromatic and haunting for its strawberry, cherry, rose hip, sweet hay, iron and licorice aromas and flavors. Expressive and harmonious, this is also firmly structured and long on the complex, fruit- and savory-fueled finish."

"A captivating bouquet of candied red cherries and raspberries intertwines with wild mint and delicate floral notes reminiscent of violet and rose petals. The palate demonstrates both power and finesse, where chewy, well-integrated tannins provide a firm structural foundation without compromising elegance. The wine's depth suggests layers of red fruit preserves and subtle herbal nuances, carried by a refined finish that speaks to Monvigliero's prestigious terroir."

More about Vietti

One of the great names from Barolo, Vietti has been a pioneering force in Piedmont for decades, going back to the 1961 Rocche, one of the first single-vineyard designated bottles ever. The Rocche, and other single Cru wines from outside Castiglione, are among the most sought-after Barolo being made today.

Vietti also makes a Barolo normale called Castiglione, which confusingly is made mostly with fruit from Ravera, in the village of Novello, rather than Castiglione. It’s a good wine to stock up on just about every vintage. The style at Vietti is neither particularly traditional or particularly modern: a down-the-middle approach that is focused primarily on quality and terroir expression.
