The name is literal: Seriously Old Dirt is named for Vilafonté's "vilafontes" soils, a clay-and-gravel mix dated at between 750,000 and 1.5 million years old, on an estate where Stone Age cutting tools have turned up near the surface. Vilafonté sits on the northern side of the Simonsberg Mountain in Paarl, in South Africa's Cape winelands. The cuvée started in 2012 as a classic Bordeaux-style second wine. It has since become a multi-vineyard blend the house calls "regionally agnostic," led by winemaker Arlene Mains, using the estate's own vines plus other old-soil Western Cape sites managed by longtime grower Marko Roux. In 2022 the first fruit picked came from the home property in Paarl and the rest from Bonnievale and Robertson, where a cool, wet start pushed harvest 10 to 12 days late. The finished wine is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and spent eighteen months with French oak. It's the easygoing way into a serious Cape estate, good to drink tonight and for the next five to ten years.

"The 2022 Seriously Old Dirt aged for 18 months, 60% in stainless steel vats and 40% in older French barriques. It has a forward, open nose with dark cherries, raspberries and a strong potpourri scent. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of bell pepper on the entry—a slightly more herbaceous wine this year, which gives it an Old-World slant. Finishing with good length, this is definitely a wine that will show best with food. It is due to be released in September in magnum format." —Neal Martin

"The Vilafonté 2022 Seriously Old Dirt pays homage to the wonders of South African geology based on, ahem, very old soils. These range from shale, decomposed granite, sandstone and other formations traced back one billion years and having seen little to no movement in the form of glaciation, volcanic events or earthquakes. So-called Vilafontes soils are some of the world's oldest documented soil types." —Monica Larner
