Vilmart & Cie Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Blanches Voies 2013

A single-parcel Blanc de Blancs from sixty-year-old Chardonnay vines planted in 1960 in Les Blanches Voies, a lieu-dit in the Premier Cru of Rilly-la-Montagne — and it's the driest wine Vilmart makes, finished at just four grams per liter of dosage. The limestone soil here is what Laurent Champs points to for the wine's chalky, mineral intensity, and with almost nothing in the way of sugar to soften it, that minerality is fully exposed. What keeps it from being austere is the élevage: the 2013 was raised entirely in new 228-liter Rousseau barrels, then left seven years sur lattes and a further four years in bottle after its April 2021 disgorgement. That's an unusual combination — new oak and an extra-brut finish — and it works because Vilmart blocks malolactic across the range, so richness never comes at the expense of tension. The fifth generation at a house farming just 11 hectares in Rilly, Champs makes the kind of Champagne that people who love white Burgundy reach for. This is a grower cuvée already delivering what most Champagne needs another decade to find.

"The 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies remains one of the finest wines ever made at Vilmart. Super-classic and vertical, with striking energy, the 2013 is once again so impressive. Lemon confit, passion fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and tangerine peel are some of the notes that build over time. The 2013 offers a captivating mix of intense, ripe fruit and bracing mineral notes, the results of a year defined by a long growing season and an October harvest. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April 2021." —Antonio Galloni

"With additional time following disgorgement, Vilmart’s 2013 Blanc de Blancs Les Blanches Voies, disgorged in April 2021 with a dosage of four grams per liter, continues its glacial evolution. It unwinds in the glass with an expressive bouquet of lemon oil, nashi pear and white flowers mingled with toasted bread, almonds and a hint of Tahitian vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and incisive, it is built around a crisp core of fruit and chalky structure, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Possessing abundant energy, it appears destined to be a long-distance runner. Readers will recall from my earlier writing that this rendition was matured for 10 months in entirely new barrels from Tonnellerie Rousseau." —Kristaps Karklins

"This is like white Burgundy, with finely detailed bubbles. Opulent and creamy while expanding on the palate yet refined, refreshing and graceful throughout. Offers a long and persistent range of white peach, apple, vanilla and toasted hazelnut notes, with savory hints of quinine and salinity echoing on the finish."

More about Vilmart & Cie

Vilmart is on the Burgundian end of the Champagne spectrum. Older examples of his top wines come to taste a lot like a mature Chevalier-Montrachet with fermentation and aging in barrels. But unlike a true C-M Vilmart blocks the malos, retaining great mineral tension. Aside from their rosé, the wines are dominated by Chardonnay—and not the pencil-lead Chardonnay of the Côte des Blancs, but the more generous Chard that you get on the Montagne de Reims where the black grapes tend to be more dominant.

More important than these ""technical"" details, Vilmart is obsessed with good vineyard work, has plenty of low-yielding older vines, and happens to make really delicious wines. Taste and you will learn. And if you have already learned, you will almost certainly want to taste some more!s

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters on the half shell, sole meunière, roast chicken with a butter-and-lemon pan sauce, lobster rolls, Comté or aged Gruyère, salt-baked branzino, or shrimp tempura.

Tasting Profile

Straw yellow with light green tints and a fine, delicate bead. Aromas of lemon, orchard fruit and toasted bread, with a creamy, barrel-derived texture. Medium-bodied, bone-dry, with bright, unsoftened acidity running straight through. The finish is long and distinctly chalky.
