Vincent Paris Cornas La Geynale 2023

$9999

Cornas has changed. The appellation used to make "country wine" — dark, brooding, sometimes inelegant — and the new generation has remade it into something that stands shoulder to shoulder with Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. La Geynale is Vincent Paris's flagship, made from his uncle Robert Michel's 100-year-old parcel in one of Cornas's top terroirs. This is the inheritance wine — single-vineyard, the apex of his lineup. It is not light, but it is certainly fresh and energetic. It dances. It shows what Cornas can be in the hands of the new generation.

"I was eagerly anticipating re-tasting the 2023 Cornas La Geynale following the highly promising encounter from barrel at the winery last year. Now in bottle, it makes its initial aromatic move with prominent orange rind, crushed violets, dried rose petal, pencil shavings and raspberry jam as well as delicately woven forest strawberry. Richly weighted and broad, the 2023 comes in at eye level with the equally stunning 2022, packing stupendous overall drive all the way through to the long finish. Outstanding." —Nicolas Greinacher

"Beautiful nose, very lifted, with violets, black olive, blackberry and cassis. Has a good sense of fullness and ripeness on the palate – it's full, powerful, fresh and driving with a good, robust tannic frame and a long finish. It's not as massive as some years, but very well balanced. A Cornas with lovely finesse of fruit and enjoyably robust tannins. It doesn't have the concentration of the more powerful years, but it's still very good, and true to place. 100% whole bunches, no new oak." —Matt Walls,

"Theres a meaty, smoky, peppery edge to this salty, powerhouse Cornas. Massive in scale yet achieves perfect harmony between its ripeness, texture and energy. Juniper, black pepper, grilled garrigue and apple wood smoke play out over the persistent finish, held in check by fine-yet-muscular tannins and firming spine of iron. Excellent." —Kristen Bieler

More about Vincent Paris

Vincent Paris has become quintessential Cornas to us in the same way a ribeye is the definitive steak. The wines are deeply satisfying, bone-in Syrahs of confidence and structure. They follow a perfect recipe of exceptional old-vine parcels, granite soils, and generations of passionate winemaking,

Of course, as any chef will tell you – it's one thing to have excellent ingredients and quite another to execute an authentic and delicious plate of food. Mastery takes time. Here at Flatiron some of our earliest experiences with Paris' wines did not always hold our attention. He has exemplary holdings – including his retired uncle Robert Michel's prized "La Geynale" – but the wines were often more good than great.

However, recent vintages deliver effortlessly. Each cuvée offers more than you hoped, yet exactly what you wanted.

Much like a thoughtful chef, his selections are designed with purpose in mind – the younger vine cuvées are generous and joyous (a mood in which you will share, given the more than reasonable price tag), while the more serious bottlings pull you deeper into the terroir, exposing the mystique of purity and pedigree.
