Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2024

$5499

Willi Schaefer is a benchmark Mosel grower, a small family estate farming ungrafted old vines for wines of intense, crystalline minerality. The Graacher Himmelreich, whose name means 'kingdom of heaven', is the rounder, more charming counterpart to the firmer Domprobst, its slate soils giving wines of generosity and floral lift. This Kabinett is gloriously light on its feet, just off-dry, balancing ripe orchard fruit against mouthwatering acidity. Schaefer's wines are perennially in short supply and worth every bit of the hunt. A joy young, and ageless in the cellar.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett still trembles with a little reduction, underneath, a tender apricot aroma fills out into white and yellow peach. That stone-fruited tenderness and intensity is absolutely present on the palate where horizons of peachiness and citrus unfold. At the core, however, is the purest, salty zestiness. The 2024 is a gorgeous, light-footed, intense Riesling with buffered acidity." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett is clear, super precise and rather coolish on the elegant and subtle nose that shows ripe peach and just-ripe mango aromas intertwined with notes of herbs and broken and weathered blue and gray slate. Light but fully flavored and textured, this is a crystalline, remarkably refined and charmingly mouth-filling Kabinett from the dramatic steep slope framing the village of Graach and the embedded Domprobst. The finish is clear, fresh, filigreed and lively with minerality due to the fine, slate-inflected phenol grip and its crystalline nature. The 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Willi Schaefer

Christoph and Andrea Schaefer don't have much land (just over four hectares), but that’s not really why their wines are so hard to get. If they had twice the acreage it would still sell out many times over. The wines are just that good – and that coveted by collectors (and drinkers!) worldwide.

In fact, they're a sort of platonic ideal of Mosel Riesling. The family is one of Germany’s great traditionalist producers, doing everything old school and low tech, but making absolute pure and marvelously complex wines – the kind that are often called “filigreed.” With lots of ungrafted old vines (phylloxera doesn't do so well in the stony slate soils) they have intense minerality, but with plenty of sun on the steep, steep slopes, there’s tons of laser-focused fruit, too.
