Our Ultra Classic: Mature Bordeaux (at $29.99!)
What could be more classic than aged Bordeaux? Today we have a very inexpensive way for you to play-act Downton Abbey at home!
The Chateau is called Peyrabon. It is old and traditional, like a proper Bordeaux Chateau, having been founded just a few years before the Americans won their independence from Britain.
The Chateau is well situated and in the 1800s its wines sold for just as much as all the famous Chateaux. So when the 1855 classification was released and they saw their name omitted, they sued. A judge ruled against them in 1869, so here we, over 150 years later, able to buy their wine for a fraction of what they would have cost….some bargains really persist!
Pricing looks particularly good when you look at where their vineyards are located on a map. Much of the Haut Medoc is far to the north, up above St. Estephe. But a sliver of Haut Medoc also lies just to the west of the more famous villages, and Peyrabon’s vineyards directly abut Pauillac!
This wine, at 18 years, is at its absolute peak of mature Bordeaux perfection. Put this wine in a decanter for extra fun, and if you eat meat, serve it with your Sunday roast. If only Mrs. Patmore could make an appearance to offer you some crumpets!
