Our Burgundy Classic: Dominique Lafon’s Macon
Lafon and his team have been producing Chardonnay in the Macon for around twenty years now. He was one of the first pioneers from the Cote d’Or to discover the amazing terroir in this part of Burgundy, and he snapped at vineyards at bargain prices. We eagerly await the arrival of new wines every vintage, and when they show up our staff have trouble keeping their hands off of bottles!
The latest arrival, though, was a little unusual. First, was about two vintages behind the current release. That’s good: these are wines that age brilliantly, and even just a couple years in bottle really helps them to improve.
The other twist is that they only came in magnums! Ok, so this means that you (probably) can’t share a bottle with your spouse over Netflix. But it does mean that you have an incredibly elegant presentation for your next dinner party!
The particular cuvée is the Clos de la Crochette. It’s a vineyard that’s maintained biodynamically and the wines are raised only in extra-large barrels to avoid oakiness. It produces very pretty, citrusy Chardonnay. It’s beautiful, and it’s classical.
Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon-Chardonnay Clos De La Crochette 2020 (1.5L) - $84.99
"The cool essence of apple, spice and lemon-lime elements leads to ripe, delicious and generous proportioned flavors that also possess good vibrancy on the very dry but not really austere finale that is a bit firmer still. While this could easily be enjoyed young, it should also repay a few years of cellaring.91pts" -Burghound
