A recent trip to Cornas reminded us of one important wine truth: there's steep, and then there's "dear lord, are we really going up there" steep. Cornas is the latter, to say the least. It is dramatically steep, its cliffs of worn granite (locally called gores) stacked forbiddingly along the Rhône river and sheltering the vines from punishing winds.
It's sun-baked — the Northern Rhône's warmest region, often making burly wines that can rival Côte-Rôtie in heft, though rarely in complexity and nuance. And it's been on an incredible trajectory of quality for the last two decades.
