Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Meursault 1er Cru Santenots 2024

A Premier Cru Meursault from the house that more or less defines Volnay, and from the Meursault climat the domaine itself calls the most "Volnaysien." Santenots lies north of Meursault village, right where it meets Volnay. Its soils are very marly (marl is a mix of clay and limestone) and suit both grapes so well that the vineyard can carry either name: Volnay when it's planted to Pinot Noir, Meursault when it's Chardonnay. The d'Angervilles' 1.05 hectares have been Chardonnay since 1905, when Sem d'Angerville planted them because he wanted a white Premier Cru. The same Sem also stood up to the négociants and started bottling at the domaine rather than let his wine be blended away. Today Guillaume d'Angerville and his daughter Margot farm biodynamically (since 2006, certified in 2009). In the cellar they hold back on bâtonnage, the stirring of the lees in barrel, which they credit with giving the wine extra energy and tension. Above all, the domaine wants the wine to show the minerality of the site, not richness for its own sake. The estate has about a hectare of this next to 11.5 of Volnay Premier Cru, so it's a small corner of a great red-wine house and well worth seeking out if you already love their Pinots.

More about

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels and cream, seared scallops in brown butter, veal blanquette, or turbot with beurre blanc. For cheese, aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, medium-bodied Meursault built on minerality and tension rather than butter: bright citrus and orchard fruit, the hazelnut note typical of the house, and fresh acidity kept lively by restrained lees stirring. The richness tends to build on the long finish rather than up front, so it drinks well young but can also age for several years.
