This is the easiest way into one of Volnay's reference estates, and in 2024 the village wine gets a bonus: some of the fruit comes from the domaine's premier crus. The core is two small estate parcels, Les Pluchots and Les Grands Champs. Together they cover 0.47 hectares, and both sit right on the edge of Volnay's premiers crus. Grands Champs is planted to relatively old vines, while Pluchots was replanted in 2018. The village wine is a tiny corner of a domaine that holds 11.5 hectares of Volnay Premier Cru, but the d'Angervilles vinify it with the same care as those top sites. They usually raise it without new oak so it stays fresh and lively, and the vines are farmed biodynamically. The domaine's own advice is that it drinks well after a few years in bottle, so give the 2024 a little time, or open one now to see why this address matters so much in Volnay.

More about

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme and morels; jambon persillé; mushroom risotto; seared duck breast with a light cherry jus; oeufs en meurette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay profile: red cherry, raspberry and a floral, violet lift, with a light body, silky fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Usually raised without new oak, it typically stays fresh and pure, finishing dry, gently earthy and lingering. Think of the elegant, perfumed side of red Burgundy rather than its weightier, more structured side.
