Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Bourgogne Rouge 2024

This is Volnay fruit from the domaine that more or less defines Volnay, bottled under a humble regional label. The parcels sit in the eastern part of the commune, off the hillside on fairly deep, very clayey soils with little limestone. Still, the vines average around 30 years old, and the domaine makes this wine with the same care as its Village and Premier Cru Volnays. Every d'Angerville wine comes only from the family's own vines, worked by its own team, and the domaine began converting to biodynamics in 2006. That independence goes back a long way: Sem d'Angerville, grandfather of the current Marquis, stood up to the négociants' blending in the 1920s and began bottling at the domaine, making it one of the first in Burgundy to do so. Guillaume d'Angerville and his daughter Margot run the estate now. They describe their Bourgogne Rouges as vibrant, full of energy and "digestes" (easy to drink), and they see regional appellations as a place for unforgettable discoveries. Compare it with what this address charges for its Premier Crus, and it's the easy way in.

More about

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme and garlic, duck breast with a cherry sauce, oeufs en meurette, wild mushroom tart, jambon persillé, or a simple steak frites.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fragrant, red-fruited Pinot Noir in the classic Côte de Beaune style: red cherry, raspberry and a light floral, earthy edge. It's medium-bodied and elegant, with fresh acidity and fine, gentle tannins, and should finish clean and easy to drink. Think of it as a junior Volnay, with the deep clay soils adding a touch of roundness.
