This is the wine Domaine Marquis d'Angerville calls its grand vin, firm and elegant at once and, in the family's own words, "in a league of its own." Clos des Ducs is a true clos of 2.15 hectares, walled in by meurgers (heaps of stone cleared from the vineyard), and it belongs to the d'Angervilles and nobody else. The name goes back a long way. An official act from the early 16th century already lists this 52-ouvrée parcel as part of the estate of the Dukes of Burgundy, and those 52 ouvrées still add up to the same 2.15 hectares today. (An ouvrée was the patch one vigneron could work alone in a day.) The vines grow on a very steep, southeast-facing slope that drains well, in poor, stony, strongly calcareous white marl. The family has owned the clos since 1804, and Guillaume d'Angerville, the sixth generation, has run the biodynamically farmed estate since 2003. The domaine says Clos des Ducs evolves slowly and reaches its full depth at around ten years, with great vintages often needing longer. So this 2024 is one for the cellar, and if you're only putting down one bottle of d'Angerville, make it this one.

More about

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay profile at its most structured: red cherry, raspberry and violet, with a savoury, stony edge from the calcareous marl. Medium-bodied and silky, with bright acidity and fine but firm tannins, it finishes long and precise. Typically reserved in youth, this is a wine built to age and open slowly in the cellar.
