Alex Moreau Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Maltroie 2022 [NET]

$16999

La Maltroie is one of the larger and more historic Chassagne premier crus, sitting in the central part of the village on argovian marlstone with vines planted equally to red and white grapes. Alex Moreau's parcel produces a richer, more open Chassagne than his Caillerets - rounder fruit, more floral lift, but still cut with the saline edge that defines his style. He took the reins from his father Bernard in 2020 and rebranded the domaine in 2021; the winemaking remains traditional: long pressings, native yeast, mostly Francois Freres barrels. [NET] indicates special net pricing.

"This is moderately reduced and unreadable presently. There is slightly better volume and mid-palate density to the caressing but decidedly punchy flavors that terminate in an impressively long, well-balanced and dry-in-the-best sense finale where a hint of bitter lemon slowly emerges. Maltroie isn't typically more interesting than a quality Chenevottes but this one appears to be just that, at least now in any case."

"The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroye 1er Cru is a step up from the 2021 last year with captivating energy and mineralité, focused with gorgeous citrus fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with a tangy entry and hints of marmalade infusing the citrus fruit with a stem ginger-tinged finish that has real race and energy. Fans out gloriously - a superb Chassagne in the making here." —Neal Martin

"The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Maltroie is another one of the standouts in the range, offering up aromas of citrus zest, mint, crisp green apple, white flowers and freshly baked bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy palate that's suave, seamless and penetrating." —William Kelley
