Bruno Clavelier Corton-Rognet Vieilles Vignes 2011

$10999

Bruno Clavelier is one of the quiet stars of Vosne-Romanee, farming biodynamically and turning out wines of unusual transparency and tension. Corton-Rognet is a Grand Cru on the Ladoix side of the famous hill, and Clavelier's parcel is planted to old vines—the source of this Vieilles Vignes bottling. At nearly fifteen years on, the 2011 vintage is showing its mature face: secondary aromas of forest floor and dried rose layered over still-vivid red fruit, with the structural lift Corton always brings. A Grand Cru drinking right in its window.

"An intensely earthy and animale nose of dark berries, plum, floral hints and cassis scents introduce textured, precise and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that brim with dry extract. This is a powerful yet supple Corton and like the Aux Cras this seems a bit friendlier and more accessible version compared to the reserve that I typically encounter here, in fact despite the fact that this will need every bit of 15 years to arrive at its peak drinkability, this will probably not be unduly difficult young."

"Good deep, bright red. Complex aromas of pata negra, peony, pepper and menthol. Dense and silky on entry, then saline and highly concentrated in the middle palate, with deep redcurrant and pomegranate flavors shading toward blacker fruits on the back half. Not a thick grand cru but saturates the mouth with flavor, finishing with ripe tannins and lovely salty lift. This wine only finished its malolactic fermentation in August but is already showing considerable class." —Stephen Tanzer
