Farrside is the block the Farrs pick 10 to 12 days after everything else on the estate, and that extra hang time is what makes it the most savory, edgy Pinot in the range. Planted in 2001 on a northeast-facing slope of black volcanic soil over limestone, it sits barely 300 meters from the Sangreal vineyard and yet makes a completely different wine — cooler, later, more structured, where Sangreal is perfumed and pretty. Five clones go into it (114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6), fermented with 40 to 50% of the fruit destemmed and the rest going in as whole clusters and raised in 50 to 60% new Allier oak. The estate is the work of Gary Farr, who in 1983 mailed more than a hundred letters to Burgundian growers and got exactly one reply — from Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac — and of his son Nick, who went and did his own time at Dujac before coming home. The wines are made in tiny quantities in the Moorabool Valley outside Geelong, and getting an allocation is an annual scramble. Worth decanting, and worth cellaring.

More about By Farr

Father and son Gary and Nick Farr farm 130 acres of land in Victoria’s Geelong region of Australia, 36 of which are under vine. Here, cool breezes from Port Phillip Bay and winds from the west help to regulate the temperature, while dark, volcanic soils (atop limestone) ensure wines that maintain impressive freshness and coolness alongside ripeness of fruit.

When it comes to New World juice, By Farr has long been one of our go-to producers. If you love stemmy, red-fruited Pinot Noir and refreshing, mineral-driven Chardonnay, these bottles are for you – think Old World inspiration meets New World fruit.

Gary and Nick have worked countless vintages in Burgundy, and have a particularly close relationship with Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis and Dominique Lafon of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault. That Burgundian knowledge shines through in their wines.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Duck breast with cherries, roast squab, mushroom risotto, or grilled quail. Its savory side also loves charcuterie and a hard alpine cheese.

Tasting Profile

Red cherry and loganberry with tobacco, twigs and an ironstone-like mineral note; more earth and spice than pure fruit. Medium-bodied, with fine-grained but genuinely gripping tannin and bright acidity. The finish is long, dry and savory.
