A rare single-site Pinot from the Côte Vineyard, and the smoothest, calmest wine in the By Farr range — named RP for Robyn Pamela Farr, in recognition of the decades she has spent as the driving force behind the estate. The northeast slope of the Côte runs from buckshot gravel at the top, with sandstone at the highest points, down into black soil laced with limestone, and that shift in soil is what gives the wine both its lift and its depth. Roughly half the fruit is destemmed, meaning about half goes in as whole clusters, and it's raised in 50 to 60% new Allier oak; the result leans toward smoked cedar and savory spice woven through the fruit rather than sitting beside it. The Farrs — Gary and son Nick, both Dujac alumni — farm 36 acres of vines in the cold, wind-scoured Moorabool Valley outside Geelong, and these micro bottlings almost never leave Australia in quantity. Decant it, or lay it down.

More about By Farr

Father and son Gary and Nick Farr farm 130 acres of land in Victoria’s Geelong region of Australia, 36 of which are under vine. Here, cool breezes from Port Phillip Bay and winds from the west help to regulate the temperature, while dark, volcanic soils (atop limestone) ensure wines that maintain impressive freshness and coolness alongside ripeness of fruit.

When it comes to New World juice, By Farr has long been one of our go-to producers. If you love stemmy, red-fruited Pinot Noir and refreshing, mineral-driven Chardonnay, these bottles are for you – think Old World inspiration meets New World fruit.

Gary and Nick have worked countless vintages in Burgundy, and have a particularly close relationship with Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis and Dominique Lafon of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault. That Burgundian knowledge shines through in their wines.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck, pork loin with fennel, seared tuna, or a mushroom tart. Also very good with smoked or grilled poultry, which echoes its cedar note.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry and raspberry with smoked cedar, dried herbs and a touch of forest floor. Medium-bodied, notably smooth and even in texture, with silky tannin and a fresh acid spine. Long, spiced, savory finish.
