Cantine Guastaferro Irpinia Aglianico Memini 2017

$2999

Raffaele Guastaferro joined his family winery in 2013 determined to elevate Aglianico to its rightful place among Italy's finest reds. This 2017 proves his point: from 100% Aglianico grown on volcanic soils at 350 meters, it delivers a stunning bouquet of musky blackberries mixed with dried roses, autumnal spices, and hints of red licorice. Full-bodied with round, bold tannins, it punches far above its price point.

"The 2017 Aglianico Memini punches well above its price point with a stunning bouquet of musky blackberries mixed with dried roses, autumnal spices and hints of red licorice. It’s silky-smooth, almost creamy in feel, contrasted by tart woodland berries and minerals, with bright acidity that keeps the expression energetic throughout. This leaves the palate buzzing with residual tension, as it tapers off long yet fresh, resonating on hints of black currant mixed with a nuance of tangerine. A classically dry coating of subtle tannins punctuates the expression perfectly. Wow, and what a value." —Eric Guido

More about Cantine Guastaferro

In the context of Italy’s mindbogglingly long history of wine production, wines like Barolo and Brunello seem like mere passing fads. But Aglianico has been there for almost the whole journey, being produced even before the city of Rome was founded.

The history of Guastaferro, in Campania’s Taurasi — where Aglianico reaches its current pinnacle — does not go back nearly so long. Indeed, it is only since Raffaele Guastaferro took over from his Dad at the beginning of this century that they started producing wines under their own label. It's only been a few years, but already they are being recognized as one of Italy’s greatest producers south of Rome.

The key to their wines’ greatness definitely has to do with Aglianico’s long history. The core of their holdings is a collection of vines that are over 175 years old. They aren't quite the oldest vines in all of Italy, but they’re awfully close. They’re old enough that they were planted before anyone had heard of the bug known as Phylloxera, and they are therefore ungrafted.

Now, Raffaele does not make all his wines from these ancient vines, but he does populate all his other vineyards with ungrafted cuttings from them. Thanks to multiple generations of evolution in isolation, these cuttings represent a unique biotype of Aglianico not found anywhere else.

One of the vineyards where it is found is called Piano del Angelo. This name is significant for anyone obsessed with the wines of Italy’s South, as it is the single vineyard that appears on the label of one of Mastroberardino’s 1968 Taurasis, often cited as one of the greatest Italian wines ever.

This vineyard happens to be the principal source of Guastaferro’s Aglianico Irpinia, a wine from grapes that could make Taurasi, but instead produce the much more modestly labeled (and priced!) Irpinia Memini.
