Lanessan is from the Left Bank’s Haut-Médoc. This is the land of Cabernet Sauvignon, where Napoleon ordered the Grand Cru Classification of 1855, which resulted in the naming of the very top châteaux of such famous communes as Margaux, Pauillac, and Saint Julien. Lanessan’s vines are actually right up against the famous Grand Cru Classé of Saint Julien, Gruaud-Larose. Lanessan has similar gravel soils and works traditionally (fermentation in concrete and aging in a mix of old and new barrels), producing a classic Left-Bank Bordeaux of approximately Classified Growth quality.

Which raises an interesting question: If this is such a great wine so close to very top terroir, why wasn't it classified in the famous 1855 classification? Turns out the owner didn't want to do the paperwork. And as a result, the wine is one of the best deals in Bordeaux to this day.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

"A classic Médoc, Lanessan’s 2005 exhibits beautiful, almost Pauillac-like, cedary blackcurrant fruit. Always a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc and some Merlot and Petit Verdot, the wine is medium to full-bodied and meaty, with forest floor, blackcurrants, and some cedar wood. It is delicious, soft, and surprisingly approachable for a 2005 Médoc. The color is a healthy dark plum/ruby/purple. Drink it over the next 10-15 years." -Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"This classic Haut-Médoc producer is based in Cussac-Fort-Médoc not far from Château Beychevelle in St-Julien. The Cabernet-dominant blend is consistently among the best values in the Médoc. According to the website Bordoverview.com, the 2005 vintage sold en primeur for just €13. Still today, it shows a lovely, plummy fruit with a solid, earthy underpinning and a forward, soft and lush texture. Surprisingly good at this price level."
