Chateau Pichon Baron Pauillac 1995

$19499

Thirty years on, this is Pichon Baron from one of Bordeaux's classical structured vintages—a Pauillac Second Growth from the AXA Millésimes era under the long stewardship of Christian Seely. The 1995 is described as a more restrained, elegant style of Pichon Baron, with less obvious new oak than later vintages, showing the cedar, tobacco, and earthy notes that come only with significant bottle age. The fruit has evolved from primary cassis into something more savory and complex—dried red currant, cherry preserve, leather, and spice. Drinking in its prime; mature bottles like this don't wait, so plan to enjoy.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 1995 Pichon Baron is a wine that I have tasted several time before. The nose is lighter and perhaps less engaging than the Pichon-Comtesse: simple brambly red fruit, iodine and light marine scents come through, but it needs more vigour and sophistication. The palate is well balanced but has dry and rather rustic tannins on the entry. This is one of the more ferrous Left Bank wines of the vintage with dried blood and thyme notes towards the finish. Quite enjoyable, but nowhere near a Pichon Baron in top flight mode." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

90 points

"A stylish, elegant, more restrained style of Pichon Baron, with less obvious new oak than usual, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine offers a pure black currant-scented nose with subtle aromas of coffee and smoky toasty oak. In the mouth, the wine displays less weight and muscle than the 1996, but it offers suave, elegant, rich fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, surprisingly lush style." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Decanter

90 points

"Ripe but fresh, with cedary and flinty blackberry and plum fruit still lingering on."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Blackberry, with violet and currant undertones. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. A little tight still. Give it some time. This is layered and rich. Classy. A little better than I remember."
