"Distinct notes of petrol sit atop the tight, reserved and yeasty aromas of green apple, citrus peel, white flowers and a hint of dried orange peel. There is excellent richness to the toasty and again heavily yeast-suffused flavors that at once possess power and refinement, all wrapped in a driving and tight finish that is supported by a moderately fine mousse. This is clearly still very young and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I found it to be sufficiently tightly wound that I would advise holding it for at least another 3 to 5 years first."

"The 1998 Dom Pérignon P2 is clearly heading into its next plateau of maturity, as evidenced by a host of coffee, roasted almond, butter, brioche, caramel, lemon confit and pastry notes. Even so, there is a good bit of freshness to play off a generally mature set of aromas and flavors. Readers who enjoy mature Champagne will find quite a bit to like in the 1998. Today, it is especially open-knit and giving. Two recent bottles have been terrific."

"The Dom Perignon 1998 P2 offers an intense yet fine and nutty bouquet with licorice notes and a lovely mineral freshness. Intense and fruity on the palate, this is a round, charming, very fresh yet somewhat loud and unrefined 1998 with a long, aromatic finish. The bubbles could be finer, especially given the long aging on the lees. I had a much better sample at the domaine in early spring 2016." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Nutty introvert nose. Very dense and still tightly laced. The overall impression is very savoury – a wine with real guts and nerve, as witness the explosive freshness on the finish. This seems much more vital than when it was first released. Still very firm, structured and persistent, this would seem to be an ideal candidate for a P3 release as well."

Wine Spectator

"This vibrant Champagne is tightly knit up front, with a dense core of smoky minerality and ripe dried apricot and white cherry flavors. Expands on the satiny palate, revealing accents of pastry cream, toast, singed orange peel and toasted coconut that echo on the persistent finish. Drink now through 2028."
