Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2019 [NET]

$26999

Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot is one of the great hidden-gem addresses of the Cote de Nuits - a small, family-run estate in Flagey-Echezeaux whose Grand Cru portfolio is wildly out of proportion to its profile. The wines have been transformed in recent years under winemaker Thomas Colladot, and allocations are tightening fast. Clos de la Roche is the largest of the Morey-Saint-Denis Grand Crus and traditionally the most muscular - and the 2019 vintage gave wines of remarkable density and balance. Expect a dark, brooding, deeply structured Grand Cru with blackberry, briar, graphite, and the kind of architecture that demands cellar time.

More about Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot

Perhaps you have heard of Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot, perhaps not. I first tried the wine in a restaurant in Beaune after the sommelier said I had to try it. A delicious 2017 Bourgogne Rouge, very young, but in Burgundy, people often drink the most recent vintage in restaurants. Eight years ago, the wines were new to most people in Burgundy and virtually unknown in the US.

The domaine is run by a cheerful, cherubic fellow named Thomas Collardot. They are located in Flagey-Echezeaux and own a lot of vineyards on the other side of the Route Nationale from the Clos de Vougeot. His good friend Sébastien Cathiard owns a plot right next to him in Flagey-Echezeaux, across the road from the lower corner of the Clos de Vougeot. They both believe that great wines are made in the vineyard, and they meet and taste each others' wines constantly.

I love these wines — they have a crystalline voice, they have poise. It is like he has a magic mirror to reflect the terroir. French tasters often describe these wines as aerién, "light on their feet." I often use the word croquant, crisp or crunchy, because that is how he has captured the fruit.

Coquard-Loison-Fleurot own an enviable collection of grand crus: Grands Echezeaux, Echezeaux, Clos de Vougeot, Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, and Clos-Saint-Denis. In addition, they have a Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, village level Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, and a remarkable, bargain priced Bourgogne Rouge.
