Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru 2019 [NET]

$84999

Denis Bachelet is one of Gevrey's quiet cult names, a tiny domaine producing wines of remarkable purity and finesse. The Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is the jewel — fruit from vines planted between 1907 and 1917, now well over a century old. The 2019 vintage delivered Bachelet's signature silken texture with extra concentration and density. This is Charmes at its most lifted and perfumed, the kind of wine that rewards patience and a great occasion. Cellar with confidence.

"A perfumed nose features notes of various red berries, especially cherry, along with hints of wood, anise, violet and a hint of game. The equally sleek but markedly richer larger-scaled flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel thanks to the abundant dry extract that coats the palate and largely buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long and naturally sweet finale. This is really lovely stuff and it wouldn't surprise me if my projected range was proven to be too conservative in time."

"Theoretically there would be eight barrels of the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, but due to the dryness there are only five-and-a-quarter (exactly). This is exquisitely defined on the nose of crystalline red berry fruit laced with iodine and violet. The palate is very harmonious, featuring more black fruit than red, and very saline in the mouth, with a Mazoyères like structure on the finish. The benchmark Charmes-Chambertin remains... the benchmark." —Neal Martin

"A magical wine in the making, Bachelet's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, bergamot, peonies and violets. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's sumptuous and enveloping, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, multidimensional and beautifully vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long and perfumed finish." —William Kelley

"From vines planted between 1907 and 1917. The parcel is planted just opposite to where the Combe Grisard lets out at the limit of Griotte-Chambertin, and thus it is a site that retains great freshness even in hot years. The results in 2019 are spectacular, with a ripe red and black berry fruit aroma, and a pronounced savoury/mineral character. The wine is muscular and tense, yet retains a subtle, refined silkiness that is truly exemplary. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039."

More about Domaine Denis Bachelet

Modest - even humble - Denis Bachelet has been working at the family domaine all his life - his first vintage was in 1982. The farming is meticulous, the vines are ancient and the yields are very low. Every single grape is scrutinized. They have striking purity regardless of appellation and can age for a decade or more.
