Domaine Forey Pere et Fils Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Gaudichots 2019 [NET]

$59999

Here is one of Burgundy's great backstories. Les Gaudichots used to be a much larger 1er Cru. After 1932 court proceedings and the 1936 creation of the La Tâche AOC, the bulk of it was incorporated into what we now know as the Grand Cru La Tâche. What remains is a tiny strip bordering La Tâche, divided among a handful of owners. Domaine Forey, the historic vigneron family of Vosne, is one of the very few producers to bottle a real Gaudichots on its own. (DRC and Dujac fold their fruit into other cuvées.) The 2019 is Forey at full stride: classical Vosne perfume, spice, real density, and the gravitas of a vineyard that was, by all rights, supposed to be Grand Cru. As close as most of us will ever get to drinking the soil of La Tâche.

"Once again, the nose is super-floral with a plenitude of spice elements that include soy, hoisin and anise on the mostly black pinot fruit aromas. Here too there is fine concentration to the sleekly muscular and powerful larger scaled flavors that possess a lovely texture while the robust and powerful finish is shaped by dense but relatively fine-grained tannins. This exceptionally rich effort is a wine of contrasts as the natural class of Gaudichots is married with the power and punch of Malconsorts."

More about Domaine Forey Pere et Fils

Regis Forey makes a range of traditional, old school Pinot Noir in the heart of Vosne-Romanée. His domaine is a total of 10 hectares and includes holdings from Nuits-St-Georges to Morey-St-Denis, and include some top 1er crus in Vosne. But the wines (and Regis himself) are not flashy, and indeed they can take careful cellaring to unlock their full potential.

These are the very qualities that first drew famed importer Neal Rosenthal to the estate back in 1982. Indeed this was one of the first Burgundy producers in a portfolio that is now famous for a slew of top-notch domaines and classic wines. What drew Neal to this domaine are the same qualities that his entire portfolio exemplifies: pure, unadulterated expressions of terroir.
