Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Cuvee de Tres Vieilles Vignes 1998

$44999

Enter the sacred ground of Burgundy's Grand Cru hierarchy with a wine from some of the oldest vineyards in France. Domaine Joseph Roty's Charmes-Chambertin, crafted from "très vieilles vignes" (very old vines), is a portal into deep Pinot Noir tradition: intensely concentrated, wonderfully complex, and built for the long haul. This 1998, approaching three decades of age, has evolved into a wine of remarkable sophistication, its dark cherry and earthiness softened by time and complemented by subtle hints of forest floor and spice. A collectible from one of Burgundy's most revered producers.

"This has evolved beautifully and it is one of the riper wines of the 1998 vintage. That is the good news. The bad news is that the toast and smoke character is very strong and some, like me for example, may find it almost too much. Underneath the toast there is good complexity to the ripe dark berry fruit aromas that now flirt with being secondary in character. There is excellent intensity to the impressively well-concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess both outstanding depth and length. For my taste this is drinking perfectly now though it should continue to do so for many years to come. In sum, this is a very seductive wine though I again underscore that the toast element is not subtle."

"Full dark red; virtually no sign of amber yet. Vibrant, perfumed scents of red cherry, rose petal, spices and licorice. Juicy and penetrating if a bit imploded, and not showing the pliancy or volume this vintage demonstrated shortly after bottling. Flavors of blackberry confiture and flowers are accented by slightly edgy acidity, a touch of herbs and a whiff of cassis leaf. Finishes quite sappy but tight, with very firm tannins. Ideally, this wine will expand and soften with more time in bottle but I'm not convinced: owing to its slightly aggressive tannin/acid spine, it may actually lose some of its exhilarating aromatics without gaining in texture or sweetness." —Stephen Tanzer
