Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rose Fleur de Pinot 2022 [NET]

$9899

Pataille gives his rosé an élevage most growers reserve for their top reds — 18 to 24 months in foudre and demi-muids — and sources it from three old parcels he considers the finest vines he farms: En Blungey planted in 1932, Champforeys in 1934, Charme aux Prêtres in 1949. Marsannay is the only village in Burgundy permitted to put its name on a rosé, and Pataille has been treating that privilege seriously since 2002. It's Pinot Noir with a little Pinot Beurot (Pinot Gris) from the Blungey parcel; roughly half the crop is pressed straight off, the rest gets a day or two on the skins, and everything ferments on ambient yeasts before blending. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic, with only a small sulfur addition at bottling. This is a rosé for the dinner table rather than the deck chair — serve it cool rather than cold, in a proper wine glass.

"The 2022 Marsannay Fleur de Pinot comes from several parcels meticulously assembled by Laurent Pataille. Around half are directly pressed with a couple of years in demi-muids and tank. The nose offers morello cherries, strawberry pastilles, hints of pressed white flowers, and a light sea spray note. The palate has fine tension and very good weight for a rosé, with bitter cherry perking up the finish. Delicious." —Neal Martin

"This unique wine is more than your standard rosé—it shares the structure of a red wine and the racy tension of a white. The colour is deep, and the aromas exhibit a heady blend of red berries, floral notes, and exotic spices. The texture is lively and perfectly dry, with enough elegant substance to age gracefully (yes, a rosé!)." —Charles Curtis MW

More about Domaine Sylvain Pataille

Sylvain Pataille is one of those rare vignerons whose hard work and dedication has elevated the overall quality and public perception of the wines in his village. Sylvain, and his brother Laurent, now farm 15 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Marsannay. They have been pushing hard to designate some of the special terroir there as 1er Cru, and it will likely happen soon. When you shake Sylvain's hands you are reminded that these are hands that work really hard! They are rough as sandpaper because he is out in the vineyards 11 months of the year. Sylvain is also a very talented chemist who so excelled at his classes in Bordeaux that he in the consulting enologist at 15 or so great domaines in Burgundy including Domaine Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny and Château de la Tour in Clos Vougeot. He is very passionate and devoted to his domaine in Marsannay which he built from nothing. His first vintage was in 1999. Like Bruno Clair he is an indefatigable champion of the village of Marsannay.

Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade. With the exception of small amounts of sulphur when needed, there are no additions whatsoever. His wines are both “natural” and completely classic . . . black magic!
