Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge La Montagne 2022

$9299

La Montagne sits at the top of Marsannay's slope at 315 meters, where the soil is shallow enough that the vines root more or less straight into the hard Comblanchien and Prémeaux limestone beneath — which is exactly where the wine's cool, mineral snap comes from. Sylvain Pataille ferments it with 100% whole clusters and ambient yeasts, ages it 18 months, and adds sulfur only at bottling; the farming is certified organic with biodynamic work. Marsannay still has no premier crus, which is the main reason wines of this quality remain overlooked, and Pataille's single-vineyard bottlings are the strongest argument that the classification is overdue. 2022 was warm and dry yet gave reds with ripe, supple tannins and plenty of perfume. Give it an hour of air, or five years in the cellar.

"The 2022 Marsannay La Montagne has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, maybe a tad riper than the Clemengeots, though without the same focus. The balanced palate has a pastille-like purity on the black cherry and blueberry entry. There’s a bit of gas to contend with on the finish that has quite a punch. Fine." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Sylvain Pataille

Sylvain Pataille is one of those rare vignerons whose hard work and dedication has elevated the overall quality and public perception of the wines in his village. Sylvain, and his brother Laurent, now farm 15 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Marsannay. They have been pushing hard to designate some of the special terroir there as 1er Cru, and it will likely happen soon. When you shake Sylvain's hands you are reminded that these are hands that work really hard! They are rough as sandpaper because he is out in the vineyards 11 months of the year. Sylvain is also a very talented chemist who so excelled at his classes in Bordeaux that he in the consulting enologist at 15 or so great domaines in Burgundy including Domaine Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny and Château de la Tour in Clos Vougeot. He is very passionate and devoted to his domaine in Marsannay which he built from nothing. His first vintage was in 1999. Like Bruno Clair he is an indefatigable champion of the village of Marsannay.

Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade. With the exception of small amounts of sulphur when needed, there are no additions whatsoever. His wines are both “natural” and completely classic . . . black magic!
