Domaine Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Aligote Auvonnes au Pepe 2022

$7999

Twenty-five cases a year, from a tenth of a hectare of vines planted in the 1930s that once belonged to Sylvain Pataille's grandfather — hence "au Pépé." Pataille has built his reputation arguing that Aligoté deserves everything a grower would give Chardonnay, and he works exclusively with Aligoté Doré, the golden-skinned, low-yielding old strain, rather than the productive Vert. The parcel faces east at 250 meters on clay-marl studded with small limestone stones; farming is certified organic with biodynamic work, the fruit goes through a slow vertical press, ferments on ambient yeasts, and ages 12 months in used barrels and demi-muids with a minimal sulfur addition at bottling. Pataille calls this the fruitiest of his Aligotés, and 2022's warm, sunny season leaned into that without costing the wine its cut. Drink it over the next few years — there is very little of it.

"A classic aligoté nose reflects equal amounts of citrus character on the Granny Smith apple, spice and suggestions of floral wisps. The succulent, round and very punchy medium-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract as well as minerality that seems to build on the youthfully austere bitter lemon-tinged finale. This is superb and absolutely worth your interest if you like aligoté."

"The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté Auvonnes Au Pépé, named after the lieu-dit on marn soils, has one of my favorite bouquets from Pataille: endearing lemon thyme, pear, and white peach aromas blossom in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp bead of acidity. It is lightly spiced, but what makes this wine is the lip-smacking salinity on the finish. Very more-ish." —Neal Martin

"TOP VALUE Produced from a small plot west of Marsannay village in the lieu-dit En Auvone that was originally owned by Pataille’s grandfather, who planted it in the 1930s, this wine is a beautiful introduction to Pataille’s single-vineyard Aligoté range. Grapefruit and apricot fruit with structure and power on the palate, but enough pleasant, lemony brightness to bring balance. Organic."

More about Domaine Sylvain Pataille

Sylvain Pataille is one of those rare vignerons whose hard work and dedication has elevated the overall quality and public perception of the wines in his village. Sylvain, and his brother Laurent, now farm 15 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Marsannay. They have been pushing hard to designate some of the special terroir there as 1er Cru, and it will likely happen soon. When you shake Sylvain's hands you are reminded that these are hands that work really hard! They are rough as sandpaper because he is out in the vineyards 11 months of the year. Sylvain is also a very talented chemist who so excelled at his classes in Bordeaux that he in the consulting enologist at 15 or so great domaines in Burgundy including Domaine Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny and Château de la Tour in Clos Vougeot. He is very passionate and devoted to his domaine in Marsannay which he built from nothing. His first vintage was in 1999. Like Bruno Clair he is an indefatigable champion of the village of Marsannay.

Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade. With the exception of small amounts of sulphur when needed, there are no additions whatsoever. His wines are both “natural” and completely classic . . . black magic!
