"The 2022 Riesling Wachenheim Village is picked "all the way between the forest and the Weinstrasse" across Erste Lagen in Wachenheim, fermented half in large barrels and half in stainless steel. The nose blends flinty, reductive verve with apple juiciness before verging into lemony verve. The palate has the same juiciness, with a slight inflection of yeast on the plate, partly pithy, partly zesty, but very fresh. There's tension and creaminess simultaneously, bone-dry and properly mouth-watering. Lovely echo." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2022 Wachenheim Riesling Trocken Village opens with a clear, intense and concentrated yet also subtle and refined bouquet of spicy as well as fleshy and juicy Riesling berries. Savory and fresh on the palate, this is a lean and straight, piquant and finely phenolic dry Riesling with persistent salinity and promising structure. Tasted at the Nobelhart & Schmutzig restaurant in Berlin, February 2024." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Dr. Burklin-Wolf

Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, one of the renowned 3 B's of Germany's Pfalz, along with Basserman-Jordan, von Buhl (today's von Winning), are now making the best wines in their 400 year history. This family-run estate has been a go-to for Riesling fanatics for generations even if their presence in the NY market waned for a few years. Fortunately, they've found a home with top German wine importer, Skurnik Wine & Spirits, and are back with a line up of absolutely gorgeous wines.

The Pfalz is unlike any other German wine region and really, unlike any other wine region in the world. It's a diverse landscape of varied soil types, topography and grapes, producing a plethora of styles. The one thing the best estates have in common is devotion to Riesling, but of a singular style compared to those produced further north, in the Mosel or Rheingau.

The majority are dry, complex, structured, and overtly textural. The best are power-houses of sinewy density and mineralic concentration. All possess that inherent steely spike of acidity, a signature of German wines.

They have prime vineyard holdings, but the key is their team. Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze took over in 1990 with relentless quest for quality ever since (they were the first estate certified by Biodyvin, the biodynamic certifier for DRC). Young gun's Nicola Libelli (cellar master) and Jan Hock (Chef de Culture/vineyard manager) have infused the place and the wines with a raw energy and focus. Never have site and cellar been so aligned, and the results are palpable.
