Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2016 [NET]

$25999

Drouhin-Laroze is a sixth-generation Gevrey-Chambertin family estate that has quietly become one of the most exciting addresses on the Cote de Nuits, with siblings Nicolas and Caroline Drouhin sharpening the wines and easing back on new oak. Bonnes Mares straddles Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny and gives a Pinot Noir of unusual weight and structure for its commune. The 2016 shows the vintage's classical proportions: cassis, spice, dried flowers, and a firm but elegant tannic frame built for long aging. A Grand Cru with serious cellar potential.

More about Drouhin-Laroze

Caroline Drouhin and her brother Nicolas are now firmly in command at Domaine Drouhin-Laroze. They have made many changes to the farming, winemaking and cellar techniques. Notably, winemaker Nicolas has been vinifying with a percentage of whole clusters since 2015. They have put their stamp on the wines with great results. Once again a new generation has revitalized the family domaine.

I like these wines, they are elegant and delicate expressions of Gevrey, a village known for power. Their Clos de Beze is stylish rather than weighty. Although based in Gevrey they excel at two Chambolle based wines, their Bonnes Mares and the very rare Musigny. Over the last ten years Nicolas has been using a percentage of whole clusters in the fermentation.

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze own 11.5 hectares of old vines in the Côte de Nuits. Macerations are gentle in a mix of neutral enameled steel, stainless steel and cement vats. Bottling occurs in February-March after two long winters on the lees. There is a racking from one cellar to another before the next harvest.
