Fernand et Laurent Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse 2020 [NET]

$12999

Don't confuse Fernand et Laurent Pillot with the better-known Paul Pillot — they're a different branch of the Pillot family, quietly making some of the most reliable values in Chassagne. Vide Bourse is a tiny premier cru on the Batard-Montrachet side of the village, a few meters from the grand cru wall. The name translates loosely as "empty purse," a wink at how much it costs to own a piece of dirt this good. The 2020 sees about half new oak and a year in barrel, emerging with serious richness held in check by saline acidity. Aromas of orange oil, freshly baked bread, pear, and citrus blossom lead a fleshy, controlled palate that finishes long and mineral. A wine to cellar a few years before opening.

"From a parcel that is immediately adjacent to Bâtard This is perhaps the most floral-suffused nose of the range with its notes of acacia, carnation and rose petal while displaying a slightly cooler array of various white orchard fruit, passion fruit and a whiff of exotic tea. The delicious, intense and muscular yet refined full-bodied flavors once again brim with sappy dry extract on the focused, palate staining and seriously long finish. It would be no stretch to describe this as a scaled down version of a fine Bâtard. Excellent."

"The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse is brilliant, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange oil, freshly baked bread, citrus blossom, Anjou pear and buttered toast. Medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, it's fleshy but controlled, with lively acids and a long, saline finish." —William Kelley

More about Fernand et Laurent Pillot

In Burgundy, evolution is gradual, measured in generations rather than years. But if you’re watching at just the right moment you can witness the long hand of the clock hit twelve, and the short hand skip ahead one notch.

At Domaine Fernand et Laurent Pillot, that moment is now: 2022 marks Adrien Pillot's first vintage with full control of the family domaine, after five years of careful experimentation and training alongside his father. It’s a pleasure to behold.

But nailing this traditional character in today's climate requires new thinking. Adrien's thoughtful innovations speak directly to this challenge: he now harvests the grapes in small cases during the afternoon and lets them chill overnight before pressing, preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. After years of organic practices, the conversion to organic farming became official with this vintage.
