Giovanni Sordo Barolo La Serra 2021

This is single-cru Barolo from a family house that bottles eight of them, so La Serra gives you one specific hillside instead of a blend from across the zone. Sordo has been family-run for four generations. From the 1950s, Giovanni Sordo, Giuseppe's son, went looking for what the Piedmontese call "surì," vineyards especially well suited to the vine. Those purchases are the backbone of the estate, which now farms 53 hectares across the Langhe and Roero, including La Morra. If you like lining up Barolo crus to see how much the site changes Nebbiolo, a producer working with eight of them is a good place to start, and La Serra makes a fine addition to the lineup. It's a young 2021, so give it time in the cellar or a generous decant before pouring.

More about

Sordo is an old-school Barolo producer that has been making wine for over a century. They have the distinction of owning vineyards in eight different Crus spread across five different Barolo communes. A visit to their cellar is time travel: you will enter into a decades-old winery with over 100 large, Slavonian oak casks (botti)! Their library is also well endowed with bottles from many vintages past.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), agnolotti del plin filled with roast meat, tajarin with butter and shaved truffle, rabbit braised with rosemary, or aged Castelmagno cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barolo profile: sour cherry and red berry with violets and dried flowers, tar, dried herbs and a hint of spice. Typically medium-bodied but powerful, with bright acidity and firm, grippy Nebbiolo tannins that need time or a long decant to soften, finishing dry, long and savoury. It's a wine built to age.
