Monvigliero is one of the most coveted vineyards in Verduno, and researchers and experts have long treated it as a de facto grand cru because of its microclimate. The Sordos farm their rows on slopes facing south and south-east at 280–320 metres, in light, fine, fairly dry marls that date to the Tortonian. The estate's turning point came with Giovanni Sordo, son of founder Giuseppe, who had a gift for picking vineyards, and today Monvigliero sits alongside crus like Rocche di Castiglione, Villero and Monprivato in the family's lineup. The house generally makes its Monvigliero the traditional way, with a long submerged-cap maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels rather than small new wood. If you know Barolo's famous villages but haven't explored Verduno yet, this is a great place to start.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic; pappardelle with wild boar or hare ragù; braised beef in Barolo; roast pheasant or guinea fowl; tajarin with butter and shaved truffle. Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C.

Tasting Profile

Expect the perfumed, elegant side of Barolo: red cherry, violets and the peppery spice Verduno is known for, with savoury hints of tar and dried herbs. Traditional ageing in large Slavonian oak keeps the fruit in focus, while firm Nebbiolo tannins and bright acidity carry a long, dry finish built to age.
